Three Mistakes People End Up Doing in Earthing
Do you know 30 person lose a life every day in India just because of electrocution? Yes, it's true.
We hear about so many electrical accidents everyday. Its common belief at least half of them could have been avoided had the installation observed the basic electrical safety rules. Earthing ( or Grounding) is one of the most ignored areas.
As many as 30 percent of homes in India do not have earthing installed in their home. If installed, they don’t know if it's working or not… The Salt Charcoal earthing, most common until the last few years had a normal life, not above 10 years… That too if it is done under the guidance of an experienced electrical engineer or electrician.
First Mistake:
Most people don’t have earthing or never check if their earthing is working or not? It's advisable to check earthings at least for working once a year. In the case of residential areas installation, we may not go with the complex fall of the potential method to check earthings. We can easily check it with a light bulb power supplied by a phase-in installation and return wire connected to the earthing we want to check or earth wire in a room we want to ensure if extended to a working earthing. This can be easily checked if the bulb is glowing when two wires are connected to phase and earth In a 3 pin socket.
"Never Ignore to EARTHING and Lightning PROTECTION"
Second Mistake:
Insufficient earthing. There is a practice nowadays solar installers following to save money, by using chemical earthings of length as small as 1 meter. This is not recommended. The earthings should be of a minimum of 2 meters, with the augured hole still 3 meters with earthing placed approx. 1 meter below the top surface. Remember, in the summer days the top 1 meter completely loses the moisture and leads to failure. Secondly, in commercial installations or industries, inadequate nos of earthings is another problem. Entrepreneurs keep on increasing equipment without giving thought to this. However, it is the job of a competent electrical engineer to decide nos of earthing required for the safety of equipment and personnel and he must also be consulted when capacity is being increased.
Third mistake:
Ignore Neutral. Electronic devices now a day are sensitive to neutral-to-earth voltage. Both neutral and ground voltage references are used in electronic devices or PCBs and higher voltage differences may lead to damage to the card. When the card is damaged, they often blame earthing of equipment. But they forget it could be neutral voltage due to unbalance in loads on the transformer power if fed from or maybe transformers earthing itself may fail. Therefore, in all such installations, they should also focus on the effectiveness of the neutral earthing of the transformer.
